Relation of the 2003 SARS Outbreak to the COVID-19 2020 Pandemic

The outbreak of 2002-2004 SARS outbreak resulted in devastating health outcomes around the world. While the SARS outbreak shares similarities with the current COVID19 pandemic, the outbreak was relatively short-lived and quarantine guidelines were not as stringent. In particular, the high suicide rates in the geriatric population during the 2003 SARS outbreak serves as a warning for contemporary pandemic guidelines.

Results from the table indicate different variables measured, including their gender, psychiatric profiles, sociodemographic status, level of dependence, and individuals living with personal problems. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/20418214/

Using qualitative data analysis and studies based on the Coroner Court report, researchers analyzed the association between the higher rates of suicide during SARS outbreak among the geriatric population in Hong Kong. The study hypothesized various factors including fears surrounding the SARS epidemic, disconnectedness of older adults in the community, and feelings of being a burden to the family along with other risk factors for suicide. Out of the 321 suicides that occurred during the SARS outbreak, 22 suicide notes mentioned the epidemic, out of which some individuals had been infected, some were diagnosed with anxiety and depression, and some victims experienced social isolation. While these findings are disheartening, it is even more alarming to take into consideration the impact that the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic can have on the geriatric community as a result of stay-at-home guidelines.

Future Interventions?

The social ramifications of the SARS outbreak should create an incentive for health professionals to alleviate problems observed in future pandemics through effective communication, and special consideration for the elderly during stay-at-home orders. Prioritizing the need for mental health and well-being is crucial in reducing the incidence of social isolation and suicide.
