Interplay of genetics and loneliness
Cardiovascular System
Another catalyst in the domino effect of social isolation and loneliness
Extended periods of social isolation and loneliness are closely associated with adverse cardiovascular health outcomes.
Studies indicate that a high degree of social isolation increases the risk of mortality, whereas a high degree of loneliness increases the risk of morbidity.

The increased risks in both mortality and morbidity ties back to genetics studies on adiposity as well as studies on metabolic dysregulation as a result of social isolation.
We stress that the interplay between genetics, neuroendocrine functioning and cardiovascular health forms the foundation of a vicious cycle of the worsening mental and physical effects of social isolation and loneliness.
Thus, the need for a comprehensive and improved healthcare system that accommodates the mental and physical needs of geriatric patients is crucial.
